Кстати, о Брэдбери. Пока писала эссе, нашла статью чувака, о Дансени,Лавкрафте и Брэдбери. У него же есть и монография, полностью посвященная Б., но ее я в сети не нашла, а на Амазане цены кусаются.
Энивей, он творчество Брэдбери рассматривает по Бахтину, через карнавальность. И до меня вдруг дошло, как же он прав! Если б мне хотя бы эту статью, когда я на третьем курсе писала курсовик по Вину из одуванчиков...

The Martian Chronicles as a kaleidoscope of the life and time

Even though this book called Chronicles and its stories are placed within a “real” timeline, the Bradbury’s Mars is timeless. The Martian tales are like shards of mirrored glass that reflect, with a twist, human life. “It’s a place of the subconscious, of the imagination. It’s [...] the blank canvas upon which humans paint their dreams, their nightmares, their greatest hopes, and their deepest fears.” (2)

The time in "The Martian Chronicles" is relative. It is measured by human lives and it mostly goes in circles, “time is not real in a strict sense; what is real is change or process”. (3) The civilization dies, then a new people come to the abandoned lands and all starts anew. Stories AND THE MOON BE STILL AS BRIGHT and THERE WILL COME SOFT RAINS compliment each other in the way that both reveal the world after its inhabitants all gone.

But most clearly the strange flow of the time in Martian Chronicles is shown in the NIGHT MEETING. This story revealed the dream-alike nature of the Mars and its time.
There is a long passage about physical appearance of time and how “time is crazy up here”. (1) The Mars was called a kaleidoscope that constantly changes its timeline shape. And, after Tomas “drove the truck between hills of Time", its flow twisted and he was able to meet the Martian. The description of this meeting feels like Tomas was standing in front of the mirror, so similar those two are. Caught in between past and future, they were "not dead, not alive [...] Two strangers passing." (1) In this strange dream two pieces of Martian different pasts or futures become one just for a minute.

So, through the colourful kaleidoscope of timeless dreams, in these stories readers can see real Martians: “The Martians stared back up at them for a long, long silent time from the rippling water” (1)

Two ways of immortality in The Princess of Mars and Herland

Я все еще пишу эссе, хотя одно все-таки пропустила - совсем всремени не было. А последнее, по Готторну мне самой не очень нравится, опять таки дописывала в последний момент. А вот по Берроузу и Гиллман мне понравилось. Я когда начала сравнивать книги, казалось бы совершенно непохожие, я поняла почему Проф поставил их в курсе вместе, одним юнитом. При всей их идеологической противоположности, Принцесса Марса и Herland поднимают очень похожие вопросы - евгеники, технического / биологического развития общества, ресурсов. Они даже структурно близки - обе книги выстроены как воспоминания героя о случившихся с ним в прошлом приключениях, в обоих герой попадает в некий фантастический мир.
Я для эссе взяла тему бессмертия, там она интересно раскрывается.

Both these books have a theme of immortality, but present it different. In A princess of Mars there is an individual immortality in physical form through heroic actions. In Herland there is collective immortality through parthenogenetic cloning.

John Carter is representing the very picture of individualism. He is one of the kind being almost immortal: "I am a very old man; [...] I have never aged as other men, nor do I remember any childhood." (2) But Carter is not invulnerable, he is susceptible to injury and body needs. He still fears the death. Human culture have many ways to conquer this fear. Heroism is one such strategy: “society provides a “cultural hero system” that creates and perpetuates the myth of the significance of human life.” (3) Jack Carter is a typical hero - a warrior and an adventurer that won the princess and kingdom with his own sword.

Then there is another way to defeat the fear of death. Not through individual immorality, but through the prolonged life of the whole community. Herland described as a society dedicated to Motherhood. “This place is just like an enormous anthill — you know an anthill is nothing but a nursery.” (1) All women in this country was born via parthenogenesis and, in a broad sense of words, their First Mother continues to live in her many daughters: parthenogenetic offspring “having all of the mother's genetic material are called full clones” (4) There is no fear of death and no hunger for individual immortality. Once Ellador said about an eternal life : "I don't in the least. I want my child—and my child's child—to go on—and they will." (1)

Two books represent two ways to defeat the fear of death: individual of the hero and communal through the motherhood. The aggressive way to conquer the death or the peaceful one to cease it. Also, only in one of them the fear is missing.

Lemon Biscotti

Сделала сегодня лимонные бискотти. Это назло тому что есть мне их нельзя!

Рецепт несложный, взят из блога http://www.shugarysweets.com/2014/05/lemon-biscotti

Ingredients

For the biscotti:

6 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened - 85 грамм мягкого масла
3/4 cup granulated sugar - 150 грамм сахара - я взяла 100 гр сахара и 2 ст. ложки меда
2 large eggs - 2 больших яйца
1/2 tsp lemon extract - заменить цедрой 1 ч.л. - я использовала концентрированный сок.
1 lemon, zested цедра одного лимона
2 cup all-purpose flour - 250 грамм муки
1 tsp baking powder - 1ч. ложка разрыхлителя

For the garnish:

3/4 cup Vanilla Candiquik, melted - нашла глазурь в пакетиках, только неправильно ее растворила, пришлось добавлять сахарную пудру
1 lemon, zested - цедра одного лимона
2 Tbsp granulated sugar - вместо сахара смещала цедру с кокосовой стружкой

Результат:

Про монстров

Электромагнитный эльф, обитающий в ионосфере земли и других планет.

Франкенштейн и его монстр, к сожалению, плохо вписались в мой рабочий график и нехватку свободного времени. Плюс некоторые неприятности на работе изрядно испортили мне настроение к пятнице и чтение сочинения Мэри Шелли вызывало не столько работу мысли, сколько меланхолию и желание спрятаться от всех, словно у какой-то романной героини восемнадцатого века.

Результатом отсутствие толковых мыслей и времени стало довольно бестолковое эссе. Я изначально хотела вообще-то написать об алхимической трансмутации и гомункулюсе... Но, боюсь, герой романа под конец стал меня несколько раздражать инфантильностью и уверенностью, что если сделать вид, что чего-то нет, оно как-нибудь само собой уладится. Думаю, это из=за того, что я сама регулярно так делаю и лишнее напоминание об этом не прибавило мне хорошего настроения.

Зато на форуме поделились ссылкой на выложенный онлайн манускрипт Франкенштейна с расшифровкой: shelleygodwinarchive.org/contents/frankenstein

Эссе выложу, но под море, чтобы не травмировать случайно зашедших людей. Оно банальное и написано второпях за два часа до дедлайна.

Dracula and lunar goddess

Dracula's association with the moon ties him with the lunar goddess like Hecate. Hecate “was variously associated with crossroads, entrance-ways, dogs, light, the moon, magic, witchcraft, knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants, ghosts, necromancy, and sorcery”. (2) It's significant, that to destroy him, there were used men's tools: a stake (an obvious phallic symbol), a hammer, a knife. His power was feminine by origin and manifests in the moonlight, the witchcraft and shape-shifting.

Dracula is called, “stregoica”—witch, “vrolok” and “vlkoslak”. (1) The stregoica (strigoaica), that means witch, or the Strigă - “in superstitions, is an imaginary being, a woman who bothers or tortures little children”. (3) Harker saw how Dracula bring to his castle children, and later Lucy, as a vampire, hunts only on children.

Dracula frequently shows his ability to witchcraft. He can command the wind, as he called the storm when reaching Whitby's harbour. He can come “in mist which he create” and “on moonlight rays as elemental dust”. (1) Also he can command animals and his appearance presaged by dog’s howling. The dog is Hecate’s animal, she was “accompanied by a dog” or “heralded by the howling of a dog”. (2)

One more of Dracula’s ability is that he can change into a wolf (dog) or a bat. Thus comes names like “vrolok” and “vlkoslak”, a misspelled “vlŭkodlakŭ” (3) - werewolf. So Dracula not only an Undead ex-human, he also is partly animal.
He has a double nature of someone living who exist on the border of two worlds: alive and dead, natural and unnatural, male and female.

Dracula represent the ancient way for gaining the power, given by lunar goddess that demand to sacrifice his humanity to become united with the uncanny. When he was defeated by Van Helsing’s team, it symbolise the victory of the modern way, the science that gives tools to men to overcome the chaos of the nature.

Но это еще не все! One of my fellow coursers, Radu Diaconu, сам из Румынии. И он заметил, что слово "strigă" для него всегда имело значение "barn owl" - сова-сипуха. В беседе всплыло еще одно слово: итальянское "strega" означающее колдовство, ведьмовство. Раду начал копать этимологию этих слов и нашел кучу интереснейшей информации. Я просто скопирую его пост, все лавры тут принадлежат ему!

"The Romanian "strigă" (noun) is identical with "strigă", meaning "he/she/it/they scream/s" - a form of the verb "a striga" - "to scream". These words are related - they're both from the Latin "strix", meaning "owl" - and there seems to be another intermediary, undocumented Latin verb form *"strigare" - which is identical to the Romanian noun "strigare", meaning "scream"(noun). Of course, the connection to the owl and its screech is obvious.

The Italian "strega", however, only seems to mean "witch"; there's an Italian "stregare", too, but that's just the verb - "to bewitch". This is derived from the Latin "striga", meaning "witch". A whole different word from the Latin "strix".

So yes, they both come from Latin, but from different words. This is very interesting, since, if the Romanian "strigă"(n) actually does have the second meaning of "witch" (of which I'm not aware, but since the DEX gives it, then I'm probably wrong), then that means that this second meaning was derived on Romanian soil, since the Latin "strix" only means "owl"; notice how the Italian "strega" - "witch" is a direct successor of the Latin "striga" - also "witch" (It could be argued that it might be derived from the Latin "strix" as well, but I think that the Italian phonological derivation rules infirm this hypotheses). So, while there is an implied connection between the owl and the witch in the Romanian "strigă", no such connection is present in the Italian or Latin words.

This is relevant for our discussion of Dracula; the Romanian "strigă" refers to the barn owl - a white bird - traditionally a messenger of death: its screech ("strigăt" or "strigare") was considered a bad omen. Morphologically, "strigoi" (meaning "ghoul") is simply an augmentative masculine form of the feminine "strigă" ("barn owl"), while "strigoaică" is the feminine version of "strigoi". The fact that "Dracula" is named, in the book, "stregoica", means that, at least indirectly, it is associated with these folk creatures - all of which are colored white!

Considering how, in the novel, the color white appears not once just before something evil is about to occur, I think there's an intriguing relationship between it, the protagonist and the above-mentioned supernatural creatures.

What's also interesting - and in the same vein as your essay - is that Dracula is referred to with the feminine "stregoica", not the masculine "strigoi". Could he be an androgynous supernatural being? This could bring new light on the reading of the novel."
